Four Rivers

Backstory: This passage was cut in the original draft but it still holds true as an analogy.

In a 1989 Saturday Night Live skit, John Malkovich plays “Johnny Canal,” a Davy Crockett-like figure dressed in fringed buckskin and a coonskin cap. Before a committee of post-revolutionary leaders he unveils a map of new America that is crisscrossed with thousands of canals going every which way—all people will travel by boat, you see. When criticized or questioned about the absurdity of the plan, Johnny becomes flustered and lunges manically at committee members with a Bowie knife. Last year, many South Koreans raised their eyebrows when a similar canal building scheme was put on the table.
